Thurmond Announces He Won't Run for Congress

S.C. State Sen. Paul Thurmond announced Monday he will not seek to replace Tim Scott in Congress

With all the speculation about who will run for Rep. Tim Scott's seat now that Gov. Nikki Haley plans to appoint him to fill retiring Sen. Jim DeMint's seat, the list of possibilities shrunk by one on Monday. Paul Thurmond, who won election to the S.C. Senate District 41 seat in November announced he will not run for the First Congressional District seat that Scott is vacating. Thurmond issued the following statement in an email to supporters and media on Monday: I am humbled by the numerous calls I have received encouraging me to run for Congress. While I never actively engaged in exploring a run for Congress, I felt obligated to listen to the opinions of the people that recently elected me. After thoughtful consideration and prayer, …

Someone is not running for Tim Scott's seat? I thought only myself and the animal control guy in Mt. Pleasant were not running. Oh yah--I forgot the counter guy at my local Subway was also not running. That's about it.   more ›

Thurmond, Tinkler Election Results

Candidate will fill seat long held by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell.

Updated Wednesday morning with more votes counted in the race. Republican Paul Thurmond appeared likely to win the S.C. Senate District 41 race late Tuesday, defeating Democrat Paul Tinkler. Numbers from Charleston County put Thurmond more than 4,000 votes ahead in the race, with 24,989 votes to Tinkler's 20,094. More votes were still uncounted in Dorchester County, and absentee ballots have yet to be counted. Noting the record number of absentee ballots cast this election — nearly a third of all votes cast statewide in the 2012 General Election — Tinkler said he planned to wait for all votes to be counted before conceeding or making a victory speech, should the absentee ballots break his way. "The absentee turnout was so heavy it could …

Three Republicans File for Senate 41 Primary

Republicans will finally get a chance to vote for their nominee for the S.C. Senate District 41 race

Three men filed to run in the special Republican primary for S.C. Senate District 41. Paul Thurmond, Wally Burbage and S.C. Sen. Walter Hundley have filed as candidates for the race, according to Charleston County Republican Party Chair Lin Bennett. A special primary is set for Tuesday, Sept. 18 for the vote. The race was one of dozens across South Carolina caught up in the S.C. Supreme Court decisions in Anderson and Florence counties that removed more than 200 candidates from ballots due to them improperly filing for their respective races. Initially the Charleston County GOP disqualified four candidates from that race following the high court rulings, but maintained that Thurmond was exempt from the technicality that caught nearly every…
